Quid Pro Quo

There's been talk lately about homeschoolers getting a tax break.

Would it be nice to get some credit to spend toward buying books? You bet! Would it be nice to have to deal with the regulations & restrictions that would come with it? Not so much!

How do I prove I'm a homeschooler? Would I have to submit my lesson plans, demonstrate how many hours we spend on school work? Does a field trip count? Does bowling?

What if my kids don't pass a standardized test? Would I be required to send them to public school? (Conversely, if public school kids can't pass my test--or even the state test--can we require them to be homeschooled?)

There's no such thing as a free lunch. I'd rather keep my independence and my choices for my family, thanks.

Kimmer, you stated, "There's no such thing as a free lunch. I'd rather keep my independence and my choices for my family, thanks."

I love you. I think about tax breaks, but I do wonder about what would be required to receive them.

Our state is one that is quite friendly to homeschoolers, and our county even more. Perhaps if the county offered some sort of break on property taxes to people who homeschool, even just a small break, I would be okay with that. But, if it's some sort of huge hassle, forget about it.

Homeschoolers have the right to take advantage of the virtual courses offered to public school students, at least. My eldest is taking a few, and she enjoys them. We view them as just another tool in our homeschooling adventure, and we are not under the thumb of state-mandated tests or the public school policies and attendance.

I'm not on facebook, by the way. I may just break my vow of not doing so for you, Kimmer. ;-) Do you use your real name for your page, or do you have a made-up user name?

On FB, I have my whole name--my married name is so common, and if anyone from out West were trying to find me, my maiden name is what they'd look for anyway.

FB is fun, but dangerous. Jeff calls it "the evil empire," and I think I'm going to give it up for Lent this year. :)
